About Graz
Graz is Austria’s second-largest city and is known for being a well-kept secret inside the country. This historic city in the southern area of Styria has a lot to brag about, especially for people who are interested in food, history, and the natural world.
The Romans established a small fort in the area that is now the city center of Graz. Subsequently, Slovenians constructed a larger fortification in the same location. This is where the history of Graz can be traced back. The name “Graz” originates from the Slovenian word “gradec,” which literally translates to “little castle.”
When the dukes of Babenberg converted the town into a commercial center in 1128, it was at that time that Graz was first mentioned with its German name. Graz was chosen by the Habsburgs to serve as the capital of Inner Austria (which included the modern-day states of Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola) in the 15th century.
Ottoman Turks launched a number of attacks on Graz in the 16th century because of the city’s significance as a strategic position. The Turkish army was never successful in taking the castle that was perched atop the Schlossberg (the photo on the right depicts the clock tower that can be found on top of the hill) (the only place in this region).
Graz was an integral element of Nazi Germany throughout World War II (along with the rest of Austria). During the war, Allied forces conducted bombing raids on Graz, although the historic old town was not significantly damaged. As a result, Graz was handed over to Soviet forces at the end of the conflict in a state that was mostly unharmed. In 2003, the city of Graz was selected to serve as the Cultural Capital of Europe.
Graz is home to no less than six universities (four “standard” universities and two universities dedicated solely to applied sciences) and is associated with names as illustrious as Johannes Kepler, Erwin Schrodinger, and Nikola Tesla. As a result, approximately 40,000 of the city’s population is made up of students. In 1585, the Karl-Franzens-Universitat became the world’s first ever established university.
