SIM Cards, eSIMs and Wi-Fi in Vienna: Staying Connected as a Visitor

Staying connected in Vienna is easy, but the best option depends on where your home plan comes from and how long you stay. Prices and plans change quickly, so compare current offers before buying.

If you come from the EU or EEA

Roaming rules in the EU generally let you use your home plan in Austria at no extra cost, subject to fair-use limits. Check your provider’s terms, especially for data allowances.

If you come from outside Europe

  • Home roaming: simple but sometimes expensive. Ask your provider about travel passes.
  • eSIM: if your phone supports it, a travel eSIM can be installed before you land. It avoids queues and lets you keep your home number.
  • Local prepaid SIM: sold by major Austrian operators and some shops. You may need to register with identification, so bring a passport. Make sure your phone is unlocked.

Wi-Fi

Hotels, coffee houses and many public spaces offer Wi-Fi, though speed and access rules vary. Use a VPN or avoid sensitive logins on open public networks.

Remote workers

If you plan to work, a data plan with a generous allowance and a backup option are worth having. See our guides for digital nomads in Vienna.
