This is important to know — because in Vienna, shops are closed Sundays and holidays, and late-night options are fewer. But you can still easily get tram (and all public transport) tickets:
🎫 Where to Buy Tram Tickets Late at Night / Sundays #
Ticket Machines
Found in all U-Bahn stations (open 24/7).
Machines sell single rides, 24/48/72-hour passes, weekly tickets, etc.
Pay with coins, banknotes, or cards (depending on machine).
WienMobil App (Digital Ticket)
The official Wiener Linien app → buy and activate tickets instantly.
Works 24/7, avoids the need for a physical ticket.
On Board Trams
Many (but not all) trams have a ticket machine inside (cash only, single ride, slightly higher price than pre-purchased).
Note: Not all trams have them, especially older models.
Tabaktrafik (Tobacco Shops)
These usually sell tickets, but they close on Sundays and evenings → not useful for late-night.
Main Train Stations (Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Meidling, Praterstern)
Ticket machines available 24/7 inside stations.
⏰ Example Late-Night Traveler Situation #
It’s Sunday 11:30 PM and you need a tram:
Use a U-Bahn station machine (always accessible).
Or buy via the WienMobil app (instant).
As a last resort, check for a tram onboard machine (single ticket only, cash).
✅ Pro tip: If you’ll use public transport more than twice in a day, a 24h ticket (€8.60) or longer pass is almost always cheaper than buying singles.
